Trade event to showcase 100 Spanish award-winning wines
The winning wines from the 2019 Wines from Spain Awards will be available for the trade to taste at an event in London next month.
The winning wines will be on display at the Basque Cookery School - Mimo London - in Borough Market on November 4.
The wines will also form part of the Eat Spain Drink Spain campaign, which launches later this month. The initiative is designed to provide a spotlight on Spain across the UK through collaborations with existing consumer wine shows, local wine merchants and delicatessens.
As part of this, Eat Spain Drink Spain will attend roadshows at five British cities throughout October and November including The Three Wine Men shows in Cardiff (October 12) and Cambridge (November 9), The Festival of wine in Edinburgh (November 9), The Wine Gang London (November 16 and The Wine Festival Winechester (November 29 and 30).
Judging for the awards took place in London in July this year, and the judging panel included Tim Atkin MW (chair); Richard Hemming MW, wine writer; Victoria Burt MW, WSET; Annette Scarfe MW, consultant; Peter McCrombie MW; Simon Woods; Sarah Benson, Co-op; Charles Metcalfe, wine writer; Rafa Martin, Bibendum/ Barrafina; Hal Wilson, Cambridge Wine; Beth Willard, Direct Wines; Bruno Murciano, H2Vin; and Christine Allen, MMD.
Atkin said: “We don’t have to choose a strict number of wines and yet this year we magically came up with a round, perfectly formed 100. The idea is to select the best wines, rather than choose certain styles or grape varieties, so I am delighted that our final picks were as heterogeneous as ever.
“It’s great to see wines from Alicante, Bullas, Cebreros, Lanzarote and Sierra de Gredos.
“Spain continues to offer some of the best value in the world – not the same as cheapness, by the way – and the 2019 selection has delivered once more, with wines from £7.99 to £50. I hope you enjoy tasting them as much as we did selecting them.”
The panel chose Stars Brut Nature 2014, Castillo Perelada as the Best Cava and Flor de Muga Rose 2018, Bodegas Muga as best Rosado Wine.
