Waitrose's South Africa case deal sells out within 24 hours

The Waitrose offer of a specially-curated case of South African wines at 25% off sold out within 24 hours.

The retailer launched the deal exclusively on Waitrose Cellar from July 29, in a bid to support the industry. The wines were a collection of customer favourites, representing a cross section of regions and styles from around South Africa.

Waitrose said it has now packed some more so there will be more stock available from this weekend. It said if demand continued it will continue to create more cases.

The South African case will be funded by Waitrose in a bid to help increase sales to support wineries who have been hit hard by the domestic sales ban in the country. The case is priced at £62 for a six-bottle case and £125 for a 12-bottle case.

Victoria Mason, South African Wine Buyer at Waitrose, commented: “It’s been really hard to see our fantastic winemakers in South Africa struggle with the domestic sales ban - some of whom we have worked with for over 20 years. We have such a brilliant range of South African wines and we wanted to help in whatever way we could. By putting these wines together in a special case at a great price, we hope our customers will order one (or two!) and help support the industry.”
